Diploma in General Studies

The General Studies Diploma (GSD) is a flexible 20 course with 60 credit program offered at Royal Bridge College that allows students to choose courses that are most relevant to their academic and professional goals. After completion of the General Studies diploma, students will demonstrate foundational skills in communication, numeracy, and social sciences or economic and business literacy.

RBCo’s General Studies diploma is flexible to allow students to explore courses from a variety of areas of study for their specialization; applied, and professional program credits; tailor a program of study to specific needs of their academic and workplace, and complete entrance and lower-level requirements for degree-level study and professional programs as per transfer agreements of RBCo with the degree-granting institution. for their field of interest for specialization, students may talk to the Manager, Recruitment and Admission.

Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of multiple social science disciplines in which student is enrolled.
  • Demonstrate effective communication in a public setting and with co-workers/clients in the workplace environment.
  • Use quantitative techniques to advance critical thinking and facilitate problem-solving
  • Identify relevant social and cultural issues or barriers required to enhance collaboration and team-building success in organizational and collective societal settings and suggest plausible solutions.
  • Identify and analyze complex human interaction and behavior in various situations/ cultural contexts and explain the importance of the same.

Career Opportunities

The General Studies Diploma enables students to choose a variety of 100 and 200 level courses that are most relevant to their future academic plans as well as their professional and career goals. Over the course of the program, General Studies Diploma students will gain a breadth of social science knowledge as well as important employability-related skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration and teamwork, and contextual, situational and cultural analysis.
The GSD enables students to sample a wide range of social science and humanities courses that will enable them to make informed decisions regarding their future field of academic study or career path. GSD students may select courses in Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, Geography, History and Political Science.

Completion Requirements

To complete the program, a student must pass all 20 courses with at least 50% marks in each course. Students must also attend at least 75% of the relevant course and the program’s classes. The General Studies Diploma Program requires:
A minimum of 60 credits (20 courses) in 100-200 level courses with at least 50% marks in each course; of which:
• Student must earn a minimum of 24 credits (8 courses) in 200 level courses; and
• Successful completion of at least 5 courses in a distinct disciplines for specialization in respective area of study.

Admission Requirements

1. Be at least 19 years of age AND Graduated from high school in Canada
OR
2. Apply as a mature student who did not graduate from high school in Canada but is at least 19 years of age AND have any of the following;
a) Provide proof of English proficiency – Grade 12 or higher level English or Communications 12 course. – High School English 12: C (or equivalent) from an English speaking country.
b) University or College level English course (non‐ESL): C from an institution where English is the language of instruction.
c) Proof of four‐year undergraduate degree from a recognized institution where English is the principal language of the country and the language of instruction.
d) RBCo English Proficiency Placement Exam: 75% or more
e) Completion of at least 12 credits from a post secondary institution in Canada.
f) English Language Test (only valid for two years):
– TOEFL: 68 iBT (with no individual score less than 16), 190 CBT, or 520 PBT
– IELTS: Academic version 6 (with no band test score less than 5.5)
– Duolingo 90 or more

Program Overview

Full-time Diploma

  • instructional time of 20 or more hours of instruction per week.

Length: 60 weeks (20 hours per week)

Part-time Diploma

  • instructional time of less than 20 hours of instruction per week.

Length: 120 weeks (10 hours per week)/additional option: 80 weeks (15 hours per week)

Program Duration

The GS Diploma will have 20 courses with a duration of 1200 hours (60 hours each course), and 60 credits and will be completed in 60 weeks. Credits can be transferable to other institutions with RBCo has articulation agreements. Students may inquire from the College about the transferability of courses/credits before signing an enrollment contract.

Does Not Require PTA Approval

Diploma in General Studies program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training. As such, PTIB did not review this program. The student may not file a claim against the Student Tuition Protection Fund in relation to this program.
